Silent Beep is exactly what its (oxymoronic) name implies—a beep that doesn't sound like anything. It’s useful when you don't want to hear a system beep, but still want to hear the sounds produced by other actions.
Normally, to silence the system beep you have to turn the system volume to zero. But this prevents you from hearing all other sounds as well (with the exception of some programs, like games, that maintain their own sound settings). But this can be a problem.
For example, I want to keep my PowerBook mostly silent in public places. And it’s a chore to keep turning down the volume to play GunShy or use Microsoft Word, both of which beep excessively. But there are times I want to hear other sounds, such as when I use my modem, to make sure it’s dialing properly. So Silent Beep silences the standard system beep without forcing me to turn the volume down to zero.
As you’ve probably guessed, all it is is a standard System 7 snd file that contains a sample (for want of a better term) of absolute silence.
PowerBooks will sometimes make a clicking sound when Silent Beep plays. This is due to power conservation measures. It is nothing to worry about.
And no, the menu bar will not flash either. If you usually find that annoying, so much the better.
